My first time being a Hack-a-Thon Judge

I serve on the Orion Advisory Board.  This year, I was asked to be a Judge at Orion’s FUSE 2017 – a fintech hack-a-thon.  After 2 days of coding, on Saturday we heard 27 pitches, tallied 5400 scores and selected the winners.

Criteria for judging spanned several categories, but the highlights include: how much coding was done at the event, integration with Orion, usefulness to advisors, implementation, cost & efficiency gained.

  • Best in Show – RIA In A Box for developing a standardized platform for vendors to upload their due diligence documentation required by RIAs to satisfy SEC requirements
  • Best Advisor Innovation – Mineral Interactive for creating easy-to-use web pages incorporating Orion client portal & tiles (you’ll see more from us leveraging this technology in the next 6 months.  It was my vote for Best in Show!)
  • Most Disruptive Technology (we created this award as a result of their presentation) – NetFoundry & Cleverdome Consortium for designing a new dark web endpoint security solution.  (I was the Mentor judge for this group and it was absolutely fascinating futuristic stuff.)

The Judges were a mix of “Industry Experts” including Michael Kitces, Joel Bruckenstein, Bill Winterberg & Spenser Segal and “Advisor Experts” including me, and the C-levels from United Planners, Abacus Wealth, Beacon Wealth & Signature FD.  Investment news also covered the event live.

Biggest take-away:  The massive investment we’ve made in building RFG’s technology platform to deliver turn-key solutions to Advisors and their clients is worth it.  Change is coming faster and faster to the wealth management industry.  To be amongst some of the most talented visionaries in Fintech and know that we are well positioned to compete and win in the future, was hugely exciting.
